Difference Between Proximity RFID Cards And MIFARE Cards

When it comes to access control and security, you want to make sure that you are using the best possible system for your needs. Two of the most popular choices are proximity RFID cards and MIFARE cards. So, what is the difference between these two?

How they work

Proximity RFID cards have an integrated RFID microchip that stores data, including the cardholder’s identity or an access code, and an antenna that emits the information. When the card is close enough to an RF antenna, the signal is transmitted from the card to the controller, which allows or denies entry.

In contrast, a MIFARE card is a smart card technology that can store much more information than just what is found on a proximity card's chip. A MIFARE card can be used for identification, data storage, and authentication purposes. Its durability and encryption support safeguardyour private information as data cannot be emitted until the card and its reader authenticate one another.

Frequency

A MIFARE card has a frequency of 13.56 MHz, whereas a regular proximity card is 125 kHz. This means that a MIFARE card can be read faster and from a greater distance than a proximity card.

Codes

The standard MIFARE card contains a unique, factory-programmed 32-bit serial number. This random number does not include a facility code, which is found in most 26-bit proximity cards. The code can be read regardless of the card's orientation. In addition, a MIFARE card does not require special equipment for writing data because its memory is non-volatile.

Storing values

A MIFARE card can store values up to 1 kilobyte, but a proximity card cannot.

So, there you have it! These are some key differences between proximity RFID cardsand MIFARE cards. When deciding which type of card is right for you, consider your needs and what would work best for your particular application.
